The Ryder Cup: 5 of the best homes for golfers.

With the 44th edition of The Ryder Cup coming to a close over the weekend, and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship starting in St. Andrews tomorrow, I take a look at the best homes currently for sale, for golfers.

Team Europe celebrating winning the 2023 Ryder Cup.

The Ryder Cup was played at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy over the weekend, with Team Europe coming out winners against Team USA.

Closer to home, the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship kicks off in the St. Andrews area tomorrow. We’re spoilt for choice in Scotland, with some of the best and most historic courses anywhere in the world, including The Old Course, Kingsbarns and Carnoustie, where professionals and amateurs will battle it out over the next four days.

Being a golf lover myself, I thought I would take a look at the best homes for sale for golfers in East Scotland. Here are my Top 5:

1 - The Scores, St. Andrews, Fife

St. Andrews, the spiritual “Home of Golf”, is a golfing paradise in the North East of Fife. The Old Course is arguably the world’s most famous links course and is one of the oldest golf courses in the world. Having hosted 30 Open Championships (most recently in 2022), St. Andrews attracts golfers from all over the globe and has to be number 1 on my list.

The historic town has bags of charm with its University, founded in 1413, being one of the oldest in Britain. It is home to seven golf courses, which are under the management of the St Andrews Links Trust, whilst there are several more on the doorstep, including another Open Championship venue, Kingsbarns.

The Scores is one of the most desirable addresses in St. Andrews, running from the 18th green of the world-famous Old Course and the R&A Clubhouse, along the cliff tops above the sea, to the ruins of St. Andrews Castle and this exceptional house is one of the finest the area has to offer.

2 - Fidra Road, North Berwick, East Lothian

North Berwick is part of East Lothian’s famous 'Golf Coast' and is renowned for its golf courses. With 21 courses along 30 miles of coastline, the area boasts the greatest concentration of Championship links courses in the world and, as a result, is one of the most popular destinations for golf-lovers.

There are two golf courses in North Berwick – the famous West Links Golf Course and The Glen. Other championship golf courses in the immediate area include Muirfield, host of 16 Open Championships, The Renaissance Club (the current host of the Scottish Open), and Gullane (host in 2015 and 2018), whilst there are two courses at Archerfield and a further two at Gullane.

This outstanding late Victorian property occupies what is arguably one of the very best locations in North Berwick and forms the western half of a substantial mansion house. The property has a wonderful seaside setting in the centre of the town and is just a few minutes’ walk from the beach and West Links golf course.

3. Craigielaw Park, Aberlady, East Lothian

Craigielaw lies on the edge of the conservation village of Aberlady and is in the heart of East Lothian’s ‘Golf Coast’. There are many fine links golf courses close by, including Kilspindie, which adjoins Craigielaw, whilst both Luffness and Gullane’s three golf courses are across the bay. Muirfield, Open Championship course, is on the far side of Gullane, as are The Renaissance Club and Archerfield, mentioned above.

This wonderful home forms part of an exclusive gated community of 14 villas which line the 10th and 11th fairways at Craigielaw Golf Course. With the golf course in your back garden, and some of the best links courses in the world on the doorstep, it features at number 3 on my list.

4. Barnton Avenue, Barnton, Edinburgh

When it comes to golf, Edinburgh is perhaps overshadowed by its neighbours in East Lothian and Fife. Better known for its historic architecture, Edinburgh Castle and the Fringe Festival, Scotland’s capital city has a lot more to offer than golf.

The city itself, however, boasts over 20 parkland-style golf courses and the top two are in Barnton. The Royal Burgess Golfing Society, which traces its history back to 1735, is widely recognised as the oldest golf club in the world, whilst its neighbour, Bruntsfield Links, was founded in 1761 and is the fourth oldest golf club in the world.

This spectacular detached family home adjoins the club house at Bruntsfield Links, making it an ideal property for golf-lovers and families alike. The property has been meticulously designed throughout and is in immaculate order.

5. Carmichael Lodge, Elie, Fife

Elie is situated in the East Neuk of Fife, famed for its picturesque fishing villages and sandy beaches, with two golf courses in the village – an acclaimed 18-hole course which regularly features in the top 50 in Scotland, and a shorter 9-hole course.

The surrounding area has an abundance of excellent links courses, including Lundin Links, Crail and a new championship course at Dumbarnie Links, whilst both Kilspindie and the ‘Home of Golf’, St. Andrews, are less than 12 miles away.

Carmichael Lodge is a fantastic example of how an imaginatively designed new build property can still offer a wealth of character, and it is set in the beautiful surrounds of the Elie Estate.

Wild Card - Kings Cairn, Archerfield, East Lothian

King’s Cairn is an exclusive new residential development within the renowned Archerfield Estate, in the beautiful coastal countryside of East Lothian. The estate boasts three new championship golf course – Fidra and Dirleton Links, and The Renaissance Club, host of the Scottish Open.

This plot is marketed with planning permission to build a substantial family villa over four floors.
